We arrived and found out we were painting a still life: tin foil taped to the corkboard. He had taped 22 pieces up on the wall for us each to work from. David wanted our shirts to add to our painting, and it created an awesome effect. I heard everything happen on live tv, which was on in the dining hall, as I delivered mail. It was horrifying and shocking, and we all walked around dazed. Our college president called us together for an assembly and we prayed. I was a sophomore taking watercolor 1 as my art class, and it was the first day of classes. Because of the horrible day’s events, our professor, Glenn Felch, sent us off that afternoon to do whatever art we wanted around campus as a way of having time to reflect. I chose to revisit a tree I had drawn the year before. It’s ancient bark and vines were a comfort, and spent the day sitting under its canopy.
